Immigration to our City is vital; new residents enrich our culture and strengthen our population; they bring knowledge, skills and talents to our workforce and they can share ideas for growth while prospering in our Island community.

The City of Summerside’s Office of Economic Development considers immigration as a means of strengthening and enhancing the community to be a priority. With this in mind, the City is embarking on a program to attract and retain an immigrant population, to meet the following objectives

• Growing the population base
• Filling current and future gaps in the skilled and professional labour market
• Identifying and attracting entrepreneurs for investment in small and medium sized business
• Identifying and attracting new investors for large enterprise
• Attracting international students with a focus on retention upon graduation
• Attracting and retaining immigrant contract employees of local multinational companies for permanent or long term settlement
• Assisting in the development of immigrant support networks and mentorship programs within the current business community
• Developing support services infrastructure for the attraction and retention of new immigrants
